The Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake Thursday announced that two new political parties, Janatha Nidahas Peramuna (JNP), and Patriotic National Front (PNF), have been registered with the Department of Elections with effect from July 3. The JNP was formed by parliamentarian Wimal Weerawanse who broke away from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) with ten parliamentarians. The present parliamentary strength of the JVP is 27.
The PNF was earlier identified as the front organization of the JVP before it split. Moves are now underway to submit nomination papers by JNP to contest election to the Sabragamuwa Provincial Council (SPC) and North central Provincial Council (NCPC). Nominations to these councils close Friday noon.
