Deputy Speaker of the SL Parliament resigns

The Deputy Speaker Geethanjana Gunawardene of the Sri Lanka Parliament has resigned his post. Presidential Secretariat has forwarded his resignation letter to the Speaker W.J.M.Lokkubandara Friday morning through the acting Secretary General of the parliament.

Geethanjana Gunawardene told media that he tendered his resignation from the Deputy Speaker post on June 30 to President Mahinda Rajapakse after discussion with the latter.

The reason for his resignation was not revealed to media.

He further said he will remain as an ordinary parliamentarian without any post, according to media sources.

The new Deputy Speaker will be elected when the parliament meets on next Tuesday, parliamentary sources said.
