30 civilians arrested in Puththa'lam

Thirty civilians, Tamils and Muslims, were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan police in a cordon and search operation conducted in Puththa'lam town in northwestern province Sunday morning till afternoon. Every shop and buildings located in the town came under search, residents said.

The arrested persons had come from other districts and had been employed in shops and other institutions in Puththalam. Police said they were detained in the police station as they failed to prove their identity with valid legal documents.

Meanwhile about twenty Tamils and Muslims arrested in Puththalam in a cordon and search operation conducted on Saturday morning were released later in the day after inquiry, police said.
