School girl injured by land mine in Jaffna

A 13-year old school girl was seriously injured by a landmine Saturday while she was walking along a side road with her friends in Ariyaalai within Jaffna Municipal boundaries, sources in Jaffna said. The teenager lost part of her right leg, and was transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for surgery, hospital sources said.

The injured girl, Thicynthia, is from Mu'l'li road in Ariyaalai in a densely populated area.

The incident has happened while the mine clearing operation is being scaled down due to shortage of funds.

Recently, human skeletons were discovered in the same area of Mu'l'li, according to local residents.
