Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna introduced a new security arrangement since Monday in Vadamaraadchi and Thenmaraadchi areas where SLA troops are posted near electricity transformers besides getting local residents to pile sand bags around the area. The recent damages caused to transformers in the said areas by being fired upon by unknown persons.
SLA also made use of help from local traders in securing the electricity transformers. This arrangement is expected to be extended to the rest of the peninsula. The attacks on electricity transformers took place after a Chinese firm which has entered into a contract with Sri Lanka government to generate and supply electricity to Jaffna peninsula began preliminary work from its worksite at Chu’n’naakam. Thursday midnight unidentified armed men opened rapid fire on the main electricity transformer at Arasadi Chanththi in Karaveddi, Vadamaraadchi along Nelliyadi-Kodikaamam road, damaging the transformer and cutting off electricity supply to the above area. Two weeks ago a similar gun attack was made on a transformer in Meesaalai in Themaraadchi cutting off electricity supply.
