Twenty nine Tamil civilians were arrested in a cordon and search operation conducted in Gampaha police division from Saturday night till Sunday morning around 9:00 a.m., according to the Sri Lankan Police. Most of them had been working in shops and other institutions. Some had come from Northern Province and Eastern Province but others are Up-Country Tamils.

About 250 houses and business establishments were searched and the occupants were subjected to severe interrogation to ascertain whether they had given accommodation to strangers.

About two hundred vehicles were stopped and searched during the operation.

Police said Tamil civilians arrested had failed to prove their identity and also to provide satisfactory reason for their stay in the location. They would be produced in court on the completion of the inquiry and are being detained in Gampaha police station.
