Sri Lankan Police Tuesday morning recovered a dead body with gunshot wounds from Kaaththaankudi lagoon in Batticaloa district, after being notified by the public. The magistrate who inspected the site asked the police to place the corpse at the mortuary of Batticaloa Teaching Hospital for possible identification, despite the illegibility of the body, police said.

Kaaththaankudi police arrived at the site Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. and transported the remains to the hospital. The unidentified victim was slain at least 4 days ago, according to initial assessments by the medical sources at the hospital.

Naavatkudaa is located 7 km south of Batticaloa city.
