Woman’s corpse washed ashore in Nedunththeevu

[TamilNet, Friday, 05 September 2008, 17:15 GMT]
Nedunththeevu (Delft) police recovered the corpse of a woman without any clothes on, Friday, being informed by a fisherman who had found the corpse on the beach in Ward 4 area in Nedunththeevu, an islet of Jaffna. Oorkaavttu’rai (Kayts) magistrate, Ms. Joy Mahatheva, conducted the inquest into the death at the site where the corpse was found and directed the police to hand the body to Jaffna Teaching Hospital mortuary for post mortem examination and identification to be held, Oorkaavattu’rai police said.

The corpse, still not decomposed, appeared to be that of a woman between 20 to 30 years of age, the police said.

The magistrate also gave instructions to the police to have the body examined by the Judicial Medical Officer to ascertain whether the victim had been subjected to sexual violence and to have the medical report submitted to the court.

As no female corpse had been washed ashore in Jaffna peninsula in the recent past, this corpse may have been washed ashore from Mannaar or areas adjoining Mannaar, the police said.

No further particulars are available at the moment.

On Wednesday, a corpse bound with barbed fire had been found in Ma’nkumpaan, another islet of Jaffna.

Though many corpses had been washed ashore in the islets of Jaffna from time to time, they had never been identified or claimed by anyone.
