Sri Lanka Army (SLA) from its Ma’nalaa’ru base in Mullaiththeevu district launched heavy artillery and mortar fire targeting civilian settlements in Kumuzhamunai and Aa’rumukaththaan Ku’lam Monday around 4:15 a.m, killing a farmer and seriously injuring another while they were threshing paddy, sources in Mullaiththeevu said.

The other seven farmers working with them in the paddy-field narrowly escaped death when the shells fell and exploded at the place where they were working.

The victim killed was identified as P. Ananthavadivel, 30, the father of two children and a resident of Uduppukku’lam in A’lampil.

The injured farmer is V. Ravichandran, 32, the father of three children of Mu’l’liyava’lai.

Ravichandran is being treated at Mullaiththeevu district hospital.

SLA in Ma’nalaa’ru has been continually targeting civilian settlements in Tha’n’nimu’rippu and Nedungkea’ni, in the past months.
