Jaffna PLOTE leader shot Dead

The District Organiser of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam (PLOTE) in Jaffna, Thillainathan Chandramohan, 31, alias 'Sathees', was shot dead in the heart of Jaffna town this evening around 7 p.m.

One of his colleagues Kailayapillai Senthamilchelvan, 34, alias 'Sathiya' who was riding along him was wounded in the attack. He had come to Jaffna from Vavuniya a week ago.

Hospital sources said that his condition is serious.

The two were cycling on Hospital road opposite the Rolex Bakery when two unidentified gunmen shot at them killing 'Sathees' on the spot.

Police sources said that 'Sathees' is the PLOTE's military commander for the Jaffna district.

PLOTE sources in Jaffna said that he is a senior cadre who had joined the group in 1995.

He was appointed as the Jaffna military commander by N.Manikkadasan, the military wing leader of the organisation.

Sources said that this is the first pistol attack which had taken place in the heart of Jaffna town since the army captured the peninsula in early 1996.
