Thousands of IDPs stranded by floods in Vanni

Floods are flowing over most of the roads and civilians who had sought refuge in open lands and in temporary huts in low-lying areas were forced to seek shelter in schools, temples, churches and public buildings in Vanni. Patients from Ki値inochchi and Mullaiththeevu district hospitals in need of urgent treatment in Vavniyaa hospital cannot be transported as the trunk roads in Vanni remain submerged in water.

The Paranthan-Puhtukkudiyiruppu road is submerged at more than seven places blocking all vehicular traffic.

The residents of Vaddakkachchi, Pu値iyampokka地ai, Visuvamadu, Chu地dikku値am, Piramanthan, Punnai Neeraavi, Red Barna, Thearaavil, Udaiyaarkaddu, Va値値ipunam and Puthukkudiyiruppu have suffered great loss of goods due to the heavy floods.

Thirty huts belonging to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in a temporary settlement located next to Ki値inochchi Kumaarasamipuram Government Tamil Mixed School in Visuvamadu have been completely washed away by the floods.

The furniture of Thiruvaiyaa池u Mahaa Viththiyaalam displaced to the above school and the furniture in the school have been carried away.

Karachchi Multi Purpose Co-operative Society which had also been displaced to Visuvamadu and twelve settlements next to it had been affected.

The huts of 47 families of the 86 living in the paddy field area along Vaddakkachchi-Pu値iyampokka地ai road have been washed away in the floods.

All traffic along the above road has been completely blocked as the water level of the river cutting across the road has risen to dangerous level.
