Sri Lanka International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) Jaffna closed the offices Wednesday to enable ICRC staff to participate in the funeral of Suntharalingam Gengatharan, their fellow staff slain Tuesday, sources in Vadamaraadchi said. Hundreds of people and employees of local SLRC attended the funeral to pay their last respects.

The funeral was held at Gengatharan’s residence on Vigneswara College Road in Karaveddi and from there his remains were taken in a procession to Karaveddi Soanappu crematorium for cremation.

The residential representative of SLICRC who was in Colombo flew to Jaffna to pay his last respect to Gangatharan's remains.

Gengatharan was shot in his head in front of UNHCR office in Jaffna, 100 meters from Nalloor temple, while he was on his way to ICRC office.

The killing took place in a top security area, protected by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) where NGO and UN offices are located.
