‘Stop killing innocent Tamils in Vanni immediately’ - Jaffna University students

“The indiscriminate killings of innocent Tamils in Vanni by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) shelling and Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) bombings should be stopped at once and all members of Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) will boycott lectures Monday to give weight to our demands. Our union seeks the support of the people of Jaffna peninsula in our struggle,” JUSU said in a media announcement Saturday. JUSU intends to expand the struggle by bringing the activities of Jaffna University administration to a halt to achieve the demands, the release further said.

The following is the excerpt of the JUSU media report:

‘Innocent people in Vanni are being ruthlessly killed hour by hour, daily, in large numbers.

People who had sought refuge in the ‘safe zone’ announced by the government continue to be killed indiscriminately in SLA artillery fire and SLAF bombings.

Infants, children, women and the elderly are being brutally killed daily.

We request the attacks on the innocent people in Vanni to stop at once.

The mental state of the Vanni students in Jaffna University is greatly affected by the killings of their parents and relatives in Vanni.

We urge both sides to stop this indiscriminate killing of innocent Tamils.

Around 400, 000 people in the Vanni face this great human tragedy unparalleled in the world.

The war should be stopped at once creating a peaceful life for the people in Vanni.

We urge the above requests to be met and we seek the support of the people of Jaffna peninsula in our struggle to achieve our objectives.

The International Community should urgently intervene in this issue and exert pressure to stop the killings of innocent people and to create an atmosphere of peace in Sri Lanka.

Students of all the faculties of Jaffna University will boycott lectures on Monday and extend the struggle to paralyze the university administration.’
