Passenger train service between Colombo and Vavuniyaa has been
suspended from Thursday until further notice as a security measure.
The service will be run upto Madawachchi, Railway Department said.
The suspension will be in force until the Independence Day celebration
that falls on February 4 is over, security sources said. Meanwhile, passengers from Mannaar and Vavuniyaa who thronged at
Madawachchi sentry point of the Sri Lanka Army and police on Thursday
to travel to Colombo and other parts of the south were not allowed by
the Sri Lankan Armed Forces to continue their journey. They were refused
permission by the law enforcement authority to travel beyond
Madawachchi citing security reason. They returned to Mannaar and
Vavuniyaa with disappointment, civil sources said.
