Passenger ship services to Jaffna to be reduced

[TamilNet, Sunday, 22 February 2009, 11:04 GMT]
Jaffna Government Agent (GA) K. Ganesh informed Saturday that the number of passenger ship services between Trincomalee and Kaangkeasanthu'rai harbour are to be reduced also in March. Most of the residents in Jaffna peninsula depend on the passenger ships to travel out of the peninsula as they cannot afford to travel by plane, the only other alternative available and the reduction in the above service has hit them hard, sources in Jaffna said.

There had been only four services in February until now and there would be only two more until the end of the month while the number of services during March has been cut down to four, according to GA's announcement.

This reduction of passenger ship services has been imposed as the passenger ships are being used to transport the injured civilians from Mullaiththeevu area to Trincomalee, sources close to Jaffna Secretariat said.
