[TamilNet, Saturday, 28 February 2009, 14:39 GMT]
Eastern University administration informed Saturday that lectures and examinations in all its faculties are being suspended until further notice. The death of a first year student of the Faculty of Arts and Culture in the women hostel of the university causing tension among the girl students is said to be the reason for the suspension, sources in Batticaloa said.

University administration received the body of the student, Thanabalasingam Nirusha, 23, found hanging from the ceiling fan, after post mortem examination and handed it over to her relatives in Vavuniyaa.

Nirusha’s body is now kept at her relatives’ house in Vavuniyaa.

Some outstation students in the hostels had left the hostel Friday while some of them have been located to Batticaloa.

The date of recommencement of lectures and examinations will be notified later, according to the Vice-chancellor of Eastern University, Prof. N. Pathmanathan.

The administrative activities of the university, however, continue uninterrupted, he added.
