Medical supplies to Vadamaradchi East blocked
[TamilNet, Thursday, 11 February 1999, 18:02 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) has stopped the supply of drugs and medicines for the first quarter of 1999 to the Amban hospital in Vadamaradchi East. The army turned back the drugs and medicines for the Amban hospital at its checkpoint in Vallipuram today.
No reasons were given said health department sources in Jaffna. They speculated that the army may have stopped the medical supplies on the grounds that some of it might be used by the Tigers who operate in the region. Amban is not under the direct control of the SLA. Meanwhile the officer in charge of the SLA detachment at Soranpattu, in the Thenmaradchi division of Jaffna, summoned government officials, school principals and teachers from the area yesterday to what was described as a consultation meeting. During the consultation meeting the officer instructed the principals, civil servants and teachers that they should not provide any kind of assistance to the Liberation Tigers. He also asked them to report to the army any suspicious person they may see in Soranpattu.
