2 more police detainees shot, killed in Trincomalee

The two suspects in detention in connection with the killing of Varasha, the six-year-old girl, were shot and killed Monday evening in an attack by unidentified gunmen while they were being led by the police to recover weapons hidden in Saradapura jungle near Kanniya on information elicited from the suspects, Trincomalee police said. One of the two suspects arrested earlier and held in police detention in this case was shot and killed by the police who claimed that he tried to escape custody and the other suspect the police claimed he had committed suicide by swallowing cyanide capsule while being taken to another place.
The two suspects shot and killed Monday were identified as Sivanathan Nishanathan and Dalie Reginald. The suspect shot and killed 15 March was identified as O’Brein Mervin Reno Shan and the co-suspect who took his life was identified as Jana alias Janarthanan. Varsha Jude Regi, a Grade 1 student at St.Mary’s College in Trincomalee was abducted by unidentified persons on March 11 when she was waiting for her routine three-wheeler to take her home from school. Two days later her body in an empty fertilizer bag was found dumped in a drain in Trincomalee town. Trincomalee police had immediately arrested six suspects in connection with the crime. The TMVP rival factions, Pillayan group and Karuna group, which are operating with Sri Lanka government now, have accused each other for the abduction and killing of Varsha, residents in Trincomalee said. Vairi-ooththup-p'l'laiyaar koayiladi in Tamil has been renamed to Saradapura in Sinhala.
