Varatharaja Perumal, former Chief Minister of the Northeast Provincial Council visited northern town of Jaffna to reorganise his group, the Eelam People's Liberation Front (EPRLF) there, said sources.
Perumal was taken to Jaffna on a Sri Lankan Air Force (SLAF) aircraft on Monday and returned the following day, they said. According to the sources, he had discussions with the northern commanding officer of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Maj.Gen.Lohan Gunawardene, at the Palay military complex on Monday. Later he went to Jaffna town to meet with members and local officials of the EPRLF. Sources in Jaffna said Mr. Perumal's visit has been kept secret. The Sri Lankan security forces had provided tight security. Mr. Perumal visited Vavuniya recently where had held meetings with the local leaders of the EPRLF. Ex-militant sources said his visit to Vavuniy had been kept so secret that even the SLA intelligence learnt about it only after Mr. Perumal had made an appointment to meet the most senior SLA officials in the area.
