The civilians fleeing war in Vanni detained in schools converted into Sri Lanka Army (SLA) internment camps in Chaavakachcheari Hindu College and Kodikaamam Thirunaavukkararsu M. V. have been moved Saturday to the permanent SLA internment camp constructed in Raamaavil, Kachchaay in Kodikaamam, a press note by Jaffna Government Agent (GA) said.

1257 persons of 427 families held in Chaavakachcheari Hindu College and 1178 persons of 377 families detained in Kodikaamam Thirunaavukkarasu Maka Viththiyaalayam were taken to the permanent internment camp in Raamaavil in Kachchaay.

UNHCR and ICRC along with local Non-governmental organizations are assisting in relocating the Vanni detainees, GA’s press note said.

Very soon, the Vanni detainees held in Chaavakachcheari Ladies College and Nelliyadi Maththiya Maka Viththiyaalayam in Vadamaraadchi will be shifted to Raamaavil SLA internment camp, it added.

Demining activity has been started in Raamavil to construct schools for the children of the Vanni detainees relocated.

Meanwhile, the schools which had been used to house the detainees will soon start functioning normally, Jaffna education officials said.
