EPDP candidate attacked in Jaffna

Unidentified persons attacked Saturday night around 11:00 p.m one of the Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) candidates contesting Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) and the attacked candidate is admitted to Jaffna Teaching Hospital, sources in Jaffna said. Some residents in Ariyaalay where the attack took place said that youths who had been deceived by the said EPDP candidate who had received money promising them jobs, had attacked him. Meanwhile, police have taken ten supporters of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) into custody and detained them for investigation.
The person attacked is Apputhurai Manuel Mangalneasan, who has filed nomination in the JMC election by the name Neasapririyan. Mangaleswaran, who had been residing in Colombo, had come to Jaffna to contest in JMC election as an EPDP candidate. Neasapiriyan, is also the person who presents programmes in ‘Ithaya Vee’nai’, the official radio of EPDP. Meanwhile, sources in Jaffna said that there had been confrontation between TNA supporters and EPDP persons when they were pasting campaign wall papers Saturday night in Ariyaalay area. They added that EPDP men had arrived at the place in response to a phone call given to them and had attacked the TNA supporters. The police, however, had arrested the TNA supporters, the sources added.
