Supreme Court approves polls delay

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 09 March 1999, 00:01 GMT]
The Sri Lankan Supreme Court today ruled that the elections to the provincial councils can be postponed. The attorney general filed a motion last week on behalf of the elections commissioner seeking the postponement of the elections which were scheduled to be held on April 1.

The attorney general's action was prompted by strong opposition from Christians.

The Supreme Court directed the elections commissioner to hold the elections before the April 27.

The court told him to announce the new dates in two days.
