Kaduwela Magistrate Mr. Manilal Prasanna De Silva Thursday ordered police to arrest Ravindu Gunawardena, the son of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Vas Gunawardene, the head of Colombo Crimes Division (CCD), and impounded Ravindu’s passport. Ravindu Gunawardena, the main suspect, is alleged to have abducted and assaulted Nipuna Ramanayake, a fellow student of the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT), Malambe, last week.
The magistrate gave the order after considering a report filed by
Athurugiriya Police and directed that the Department of Immigration
and Emigration should be informed of the order. However, the suspected student Ravindu Gunawardena had not been
arrested at the time of going to press. Athurugiriya Police said that investigations commenced on a
complaint made by another student, namely H. M. Seneviratne. According to the entry, the complainant and Nipuna Ramanayake had been walking along a byroad when a jeep stopped by and some armed men got off and dragged Nipuna away. During the investigations it had come to light that the jeep belonged
to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) and that Nipuna was in police custody. Anil Jayantha, OIC Athurugiriya Police, who is investigating the
matter, stated that they were conducting inquiry under a direct
order from Inspector General of Police (IGP), Jayantha Wickremaratne.
