11 police personnel remanded in assault case: SSP'son in hospital

Kaduwala Magistrate Monday ordered remand for eleven police personnel who are allegedly involved in assaulting an IT student till August 31.However the main suspect, son of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Vas Gunawardene was not produced in court along with other eleven suspects including three inspectors, one police sergeant and seven constables. But the court was told that the son of SSP had got himself admitted to the Kalubowila hospital claiming that he was ill.

The Kaduwala Magistrate requested the Nugegoda Magistrate to visit the son of Vas Gunawardene in hospital and to submit a report. Kalubowila comes under the jurisdiction of the Nugegoda Magistrate Court.

The Magistrate also ordered the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) to investigate if Vas Gunawardena and his wife are suspects in the incidents. Vas Gunawardene was in charge of the CCD till he was transferred out to the Police Headquarters after the alleged by his son with other police suspects, sources said.
