SSP’s wife arrested in abduction, assault incident

The wife of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vass Gunawardena has been arrested and is now being interrogated by police at the police headquarters over the recent assault on an IT student, Police spokesman SSP Ranjit Gunasekara told media Thursday. She is expected to be produced in court later in the evening. She had gone into hiding when a special police team rushed to her house to arrest her Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the government would take a decision on the fate of Vass Gunawardene, former Director of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) after a thorough investigation, according to Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeyawardene. He is currently attached to the Police Headquarters since the assault incident took place.

The Minister said that the recent alleged abduction and assault of a student of the Malabe Information Technology Institute by SSP Vas Gunawardena’s son Ravindu Gunawardena was unacceptable at so many levels.

“The Government will not accept this type of behavior. In fact, after serious consideration we may decide any further action,” the Minister said.
