JVP councillor detained

A Jantha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party member of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) who was putting up posters for the abolition of the executive presidency was detained and later released by the Borella police.

JVP Councillor Sumith Hewa was taken by Borella police at 1:30 a.m Thursday while he was in the process of pasting posters with fellow party supporters. He was later questioned for more than an hour.

He said the police officials had told that they were empowered to detain those involved in anti-government activities.

Borella police, however, denied that he was detained, according to media sources.
