Galle Police Monday morning took a candidate of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Nishantha Muthuhettigama into custody for a number of charges, including unlawful assembly and damaging of property. Meanwhile, a special team appointed by the Inspector General of Police, Jayantha Wickremaratne, rushed to Galle to investigate into the credibility of the accusation made by Nishantha Muthuhettigama to media against the police and the Presidential Security Division (PSD), Police Spokesman Senior DIG Nimal Mediwake told media.

Nishantha Muthuhettigama had made damaging statements to the media about the police service and the PSD and IGP. He called the police service corrupt and had also charged that he had been attacked by police personnel who came in sixteen jeeps of the PSD in Udugama area last week.

Muthuhettigama had been arrested around 10.50 a.m Monday over an incident in which he had visited the office of Anarkali Aakarsha in Galle together with a large crowd of people and caused damage to the property.

Police sources said Nishantha Muthuhettigama had made damaging statements to the media about both the police service and the PSD and IGP.
