The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Tuesday issued a statement demanding the government to subject all Tamil political detainees held in Anuradhapura prison and other prisons in the country for several years to judicial inquiry or release them. Parliamentarian Ramalingam Chandrasekaran issued the statement on behalf of his party JVP.
Tamil political detainees arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and Emergency Regulations (ER) are held in prisons without inquiry and not being produced in court. Those who found not guilty during the police investigation should be produced in court and be released.
Others should be produced in court on specific charges, he said in the statement. Leading LTTE cadres joined the government and have become ministers and chief minister. But innocent Tamils are being held in prisons without any charges, he added in his statement.
