Jaffna University students paid homage Thursday to their fellow final year medical student from Ki’linochchi in Vanni who is suspected to have his taken his life Wednesday due to mental stress, sources in Jaffna said. Vignarajah Gowribalan, 26, who had been staying in a house in Aanaikkoadai in Jaffna, has been undergoing severe mental agony, being separated from his family detained in one of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) internment camps in Vavuniyaa, Gowribalan’s fellow students said.

Gowribalan had been experiencing difficulty in keeping up with his educational activities and assignments as he was constantly affected by the sufferings of his family in the SLA internment camps in Vavuniyaa.

Some of the women undergrads from Vanni who have been allowed to continue their education in Jaffna University, being separated from their families and in some instances their children, are undergoing mental stress which affects their educational activities, fellow students said.

Gowribalan’s body was handed over to his relatives in Jaffna and police investigations into the case continue.

University students from Vanni, allowed to rejoin university recently, are undergoing similar mental stress as their near and dear ones detained in Vavuniyaa SLA internment camps are suffering, the students said.
