New prisons in Ki値inochchi, Maangku値am, Mullaiththeevu

Commissioner General of Prisons Major General V. R. de Silva said Tuesday at a press briefing that no political prisoners are detained in prisons. Only 630 persons are held in prisons under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and Emergency Regulations (ER). Files pertaining to them have been handed over to the Attorney General for necessary action, he added.

He said steps are being taken to construct new prisons in Ki値inochchi, Mullaiththeevu and Maangku値am while Jaffna prison is to be located in a site with facilities to accommodate more prisoners.

He further stated that currently about 28,000 persons are detained in several prisons where the accommodation is limited only for 12,000.
