Fonseka files FR petition seeking adequate security

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 24 November 2009, 15:22 GMT]
General Sarath Fonseka, former commander of the Sri Lanka Army and Chief of Defence Staff, Tuesday filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition in the Supreme Court seeking the court to order the government to provide adequate security and also to direct the government to allow him to stay in his official residence. He stated in the petition that he has come to court as the government is not complying with the request made by him.

General Sarath Fonseka said that the security afforded to him by the government was in compliance to the wishes of the government and not his needs, as the threat to his life is the same today as it was when he held the post of CDS.

Meanwhile, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said Tuesday that it has decided to support General Sarath Fonseka as a common candidate at the Presidential election whichever party he contests from.

"The Party and the symbol under which the General will contest have not been decided yet but it will not be the UNP," JVP Parliamentary group leader, MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake, said at media conference held Tuesday.

He added that Gen. Fonseka is the best candidate to defeat President Rajapakse.
