Four SLA killed in blast

[TamilNet, Saturday, 27 March 1999, 06:32 GMT]
More than four Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers were killed in a blast at Maasaar in the Thenmaradchi division of Jaffna in the early hours of the morning today around 1.30 a.m.

Sources in the area said that the explosion was set off by the Liberation Tigers. Others said that five soldiers were killed.

The TamilNet correspondent said that it is not yet clear whether the blast hit an SLA position or soldiers on night patrol.

The army, however, declined to comment on the incident.

The SLA directed artillery and mortar on Maasaar soon after the blast.

No civilians were reported wounded in the shelling as most of the shells had fallen in the shrub jungle.
