“Vote to empower parliament” - Jaffna University Student Union

[TamilNet, Monday, 25 January 2010, 02:53 GMT]
“We extend our full support to change the presidential system of governance by voting in the presidential election,“ Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) said in a press report released Sunday titled ‘Let’s vote to empower parliament’, sources in Jaffna said. “We do not have any hope in either of the principal candidates in this election but taking the past experience into consideration and on realizing the value of the lives lost, we lend our full support to bring in a change in the government,” the report further said.

On realizing the gravity of the present situation and accepting the opinion of the intellectuals that the Tamil parliamentarians should be given their due honour and power we call upon the Tamil people to vote in a change of government, the report said.

The executive presidential system of government does not permit the parliamentarians even to perform their basic duties and all concerned should think and act; this government always obstructs them in carrying out their duties, it further said.

All regimes are bent on weakening the bargaining power of the Tamils by splitting them into factions in order to maintain the majority power over the minorities, the report pointed out.

“We request the people to use their votes to usher in a change of government,” it said.
