Wickramasinghe to contest under UNP led UNF, Fonseka under JVP led DNA

[TamilNet, Monday, 22 February 2010, 15:06 GMT]
The main opposition United National Party (UNP) Sunday night decided to contest the forthcoming general election set for April 8 under its Elephant symbol, rejecting the last minute appeal by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) to contest under the Democratic National Alliance (DNA). JVP led DNA is contesting under the symbol Champion Trophy.

Meanwhile General Sarath Fonseka, now under military custody has indicated his willingness to contest the general election under the JVP led DNA from the Colombo electorate district and not under the UNP led UNF, according to his wife Ms Anoma Fonseka to media persons Monday.

Ranil Wickramasinghe, UNP leader is to contest under the United National Front (UNF) led by UNP with Elephant as it symbol. The other constituents of the UNA are Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), and Democratic Peoples Front.
