Contest for 2 EPDP seats

[TamilNet, Tuesday, 13 April 1999, 09:45 GMT]
Mohammed Abdul Rahim who was appointed MP for Jaffna on April 9 by Sri Lanka's Commissioner of Elections said today that he will take oaths on April 20 when the Parliament resumes sittings. He said he will act as an independent Member of Parliament for Jaffna.

The EPDP sought a stay order in Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal against Rahim taking oaths as an MP on April 20.

Mohammed Abdul Rahim contested the elections to Sri Lanka's Parliament in the Jaffna district in 1994 as candidate nominated by the UNP to the EPDP's independent group.

Rahim and Suppaiah Jeganathan were appointed MPs when the seats of R.Rameswaran and R. Ramamoorthy became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling on March 30.

The EPDP filed a case in the Appellate Court yesterday against the appointments. The court fixed the hearing for April 19.

The EPDP wants to have its own members appointed instead of the three persons nominated by the UNP to the list of candidates in 1994.

Sources said that Suppaiah Jeganathan is currently in India and was also affiliated to the UNP.
