Vasudeva suspended from LSSP

[TamilNet, Saturday, 17 April 1999, 13:35 GMT]
The Secretary of Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), Batty Weerakoon, said that Mr.Vasudeva Nanayakkara has been suspended from the Party. The decision was taken at a party meeting yesterday following Mr. Nanayakkara's announcement that, as a protest against the Government's failure to fulfil its election promises, he would sit with the opposition parliamentarians when the parliament meets again on April 21.

Mr. Nanayakkara is a senior politician and parliamentarian of Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP), a constituent of the ruling People's Alliance (PA).

Mr. Nanayakkara said the Government came to power promising, among the other things, to solve the ethnic conflict and bring an end to the war,

and to reduce the cost of living.

But it has failed to fulfil any of the promises, Mr. Nanayakkara accused.

Commenting on the Party's decision, Mr.Nanayakkara said that he would not resign from the party even if the party suspended him. The party has to conduct investigations first, he added.

When the People's Alliance came to power in 1994, Mr. Vasudeva Nanayakkara moved from the Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) to LSSP.

Recently, Mr. Vasudeva Nanayakkara has been critical of several actions by the PA Government. This prompted several members of his party to propose to the leadership to either evict him from the party or to reprimand him.
