Thousands of Southern Sinhalese labourers are engaged in excavating lime stone in the Sri Lanka Amy (SLA) High Security Zone (HSZ) in Valikaamam North where its residents had been evicted by SLA, Jaffna MP, Appathurai Vinayagamoorthy accused in a press meet held in Jaffna Thursday. The excavated limestone is taken to the cement factories in Galle in ships and via A9 road, he further said. Government which does not permit the evicted residents of Valikaamam North to resettle in their own places has freely allowed thousands of Sinhalese labourers to work within the HSZ.
Over excavation of limestone is bound to make seawater seep into the area, Vinayagamoorthy pointed out. The above limestone excavation is taking place on both sides of the road from Keerimalai to Maaviddapuram where the excavated lime stone is split into lumps and taken to Galle. “Meanwhile, in Vanni, the resettled uprooted civilians suffer without basic facilities or the means to find livelihoods even a year after the war,” the MP said. “230 families from Skanthapuram in Ki’linochchi are still lodged in Ki’linochchi Maththiya Mahaa Viththiyalayam without being resettled in their own places,” he added. “SLA restriction and harassment continue in Jaffna peninsula. Though the government claims that civil administration is in force in Jaffna peninsula in reality it is the SLA that controls everything,” he further said.
