JVP to step up opposition against Indian involvement in Sri Lanka

General Secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) Tilvin Silva Monday blamed India for meddling with affairs of the Sri Lankan state as if it was a federal unit of India. The JVP reaction has come as the Tamil National Alliance was scheduled to meet Rajapaksa Monday evening before his visit to India on Tuesday. Recently, the Government of India, while gazetting a declaration designating LTTE as an unlawful association in India, linked 'Tamil Eelam' as a separate homeland amounting to 'cession and secession of a part of the territory of India.'

Tilvin Silva, who met the press at JVP head office in Battaramulla Monday afternoon said Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa was under pressure to brief proposed changes to Sri Lankan constitution to New Delhi even before he was prepared to brief the people of Sri Lanka. He said the JVP would step up protests against Rajapaksa government if it failed to reveal the proposed amendments to the constitution of the unitary state of Sri Lanka.

The JVP secretary also described the proposed bilateral Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) as another step in opening the territory of Sri Lanka to the Indian state and he said India was still insisting on its access to Sri Lanka on the basis of the Indo-Lanka accord.

Commenting on TNA's meeting with Rajapaksa he said: "Rajapaksa alliance earlier described the TNA as 'traitors', when the Tamil alliance decided to extend its support to Sarath Fonseka in the presidential election. But, when it meets with the TNA today, the Tamil alliance has suddenly become a patriot for Rajapaksa."

However, Tilvin Silva noted that the TNA had extended its support Sarath Fonseka without any preconditions. The JVP is not opposed to TNA meeting Rajapaksa, but to the attitude of the Rajapaksa government, he said.
