Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) parliamentarian M. H. Haris said that politicians continue to use their paramilitary men in robberies and extortion in Kalmunai in the Eastern Province and that despite complaints to police with the names of the armed men no action has been taken against them. Meanwhile, the Officer-in-Charge of Kalmunai police station, Siran Perera said that the suspects in the robberies in his police jurisdiction manage to get away with the help of influential politicians.

The SLMC parliamentarian further accused that the above paramilitary men had been responsible for election violence and frauds in the last general elections and for interfering in government functions and administration of education.

OIC Siran Perera said that the paramilitary men who had broken into houses and shops in Kalmunai Kudiyiruppu, Chaainththamaruthu had stolen cash, jewelry and goods worth millions of rupees, two weeks ago.

Some members of the Civil Vigilant Committee formed to stem these crimes themselves are found to have used their official identity cards to commit crimes which they are supposed to eradicate, he added.

Meanwhile, it is alleged that Iniyabarathi, the Eastern Coordinator of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a member of Karuna faction, (the faction led by Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna, present Deputy Minister of Rehabilitation), who had been involved in many killings, robberies, extortion, abductions, election frauds and interference in educational administration in the past in Ampaa’rai district, continues his illegal activities.

People in Ampaa’rai district have lodged complaints against Iniyabarathi with the police.

Though the police authorities are aware of his crimes no action has been taken against him while he operates with weapons publicly in vehicles, sources in Ampaa’rai said.
