60 new political parties apply for registration as deadline closes

[TamilNet, Wednesday, 30 June 2010, 19:42 GMT]
The deadline to submit applications to the Elections Secretariat for the registration by new political parties closed Wesdnday June 30. Sixty political groups have submitted their applications to the Elections Commissioner for registration. Except two, details of other new political groups are not available to media immediately.

General (retired) Sarath Fonseka submitted his application to register his own new party under the name “Democratic Peoples Alliance” (DPA) with Tiran Alles as the General Secretary. Currently Fonseka does not have his own political party although he heads the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) led by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).

Gen. Fonseka’s group wants to create a separate identity as a political party. The new party is being formed under the leadership of Sarath Fonseka with DNA Parliamentarians Arjuna Ranatunga and Tiran Alles taking prominent positions.

The Tamil National Alliance also Wednesday applied to the Elections Commissioner to register as a new political party with R. Sampanthan as the leader and Mavai Senathirajah as the General Secretary.

Earlier TNA it was not registered. Hence TNA contested on the ticket of Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK).
