Lung cancer increasing in the Vanni; New houses constructed in the Vanni and one LTTE casualty in Oddusudan.

Lung Cancer Incrasing in the Vanni

Lung cancer is on the increase in the LTTE controlled areas of the Vanni, said reports from the Oddusuddan Central Dispensary functioning at Visvamadu.

Last month, of the 7404 persons who obtained treatment from the Oddusuddan Central Dispensary, 2099 were treated for lung cancer, 967 were treated for malaria and 1130 for diarrhoea and others for various diseases.

Displacement and the pressures of refugee life have been cited as the main cause for the increased incidence of lung cancer in the Wanni area, medical sources say.

New Houses Constructed in the Vanni

With the assistance the Christian Aid based in London, the Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation has constructed new houses at Manthuvil, Kombavil and Puthukkudiyiruppu in the LTTE controlled Mullaitivu district.

Twenty six families who had lost their dwellings in the war have received the houses, said TRO sources.

One LTTE Casualty in Oddusudan

A member of the Liberation Tigers was killed in a direct confrontation with the Sri Lanka Army at Oddusuddan in the Vanni on April 28 said the Voice of Tigers (VoT) radio.

According to the radio the LTTE member has been identified as Senthamil Amuthan (Jeevaratnam Senthoorchelvan, Jaffna district) was killed on April 28.
