Around 2,500 hundred students from the districts of Vavuniyaa, Mannaar, Ki'linochchi and Mullaiththeevu in Vanni sitting for the GCE A/L examination which commenced Monday are among the 2,45,000 students appearing for the examination throughout the country. 367 students from the districts of Vanni arrested and detained under Prevention of Terrorism (PTA) claimed as members of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are also sitting for the examination, sources in Jaffna said.

The Jaffna student S. Suhirthan detained in Batticaloa prison under (PTA) since his arrest April last year is allowed to sit for the A/L/ examination, sources in Batticaloa said.

Akkaraipattu Magistrate last week disallowed his application to sit for the examination in an examination centre in his home town in Jaffna district.

But later the Magistrate allowed him to sit for the examination in a centre in Batticaloa district on the intervention of the Prisons Department.

367 students surrendered and detained as LTTE members in a rehabilitation centre in Vavuniyaa are allowed to sit the examination at Vavuniyaa Tamil Maththiya Makaa Viththiyaalayam centre.
