Disappointment for detainees' parents

[TamilNet, Saturday, 08 May 1999, 11:56 GMT]
Six Tamil youths arrested in Jaffna were not produced in Anuradhapura Magistrate's court yesterday as expected. Instead they were produced at a small court in the town of Kahatagaskeliya, 20 km south of Anuradhapura.

Parents and relatives of these Tamil youths who came to see their children all the way from Jaffna via Colombo with a one month return air ticket were disappointed.

They were unable to hire vehicles to go to Kahatagaskeliya and so did not get to see their children.

The cases against the six youths was postponed for another date.

Meanwhile sources in Jaffna said that arbitrary arrests made by the SLA in ther have increased recently.

The SLA searched a house in New Chemmani road, Irupalai, yesterday morning and arrested three people. The arrested have been identified as Sinnathamby Anparasan, 35, A.Senthuran, his son 16 year son and Thampiaiyah Velayutham, 50.

Their relatives have complained to the Human Rights Commision in Jaffna.

Elsewhere in Jaffna Leolo Jensia, a 17 year old school girl studying at the Jaffna Holy Family Convent, has been reported missing since yesterday by her family to the HRC.

According to them she had gone to school as normal yesterday, April 6, and had not returned.

She lives near the Jaffna Katcheri Railway Crossing.

Meanwhile students at the Jaffna Stanley College boycotted the school yesterday protesting at the arrest Sivaroopan, a student at the college. He was arrested two weeks ago.
