Hundreds of helpless parents and relatives of missing persons in Jaffna, who took part in a hastily organised protest by the extremist JVP were attacked by Sri Lankan military-backed operatives Monday within 30 minutes of the commencement of the protest. The attackers threw eggs and tomatoes on JVP leaders Somawanse Amarasinghe, Tilvin Silva, Sunil Handuneththi and Jaffa district organiser of the outfit Lalith Kumar, forcing the JVP leaders to flee from the protest site which was heavily guarded by Sri Lankan police and monitored by military officers.
Several key persons of JVP had come to Jaffna to organise the demonstration under a front-organisation called “We Sri Lankans” (Naam Ilangkaiyar). The JVP has stepped up campaign against Rajapaksa family rule in the South. Commenting on the plight of missing persons family members and relatives, a Tamil human rights activist told TamilNet that the episode on Monday, despite the JVP involvement, has contributed to highlight the plight of the missing persons. The episode also exposed how far the Tamils have been subjugated and denied of their democratic rights, especially after the conclusion of genocidal war in 2009.
