Vanni schools face closure due to torrential rain, negligence
[TamilNet, Tuesday, 30 November 2010, 09:03 GMT]
Education department sources have warned that schools in Vanni
are facing closure due to continuous torrential rain. Majority of
schools including in Ki'linochchi, Mullaiththeevu, Mannaar, and
Vadamaraachchi East have been functioning in temporary shelters. Classrooms have been under water due to rain. Members of several families have also sought refuge in
temporary shelters put up in schools as their houses are also under
water. Hence education authorities have asked students not to come to
schools which are located in rain affected areas.
Schools in Vanni region have not been provided with basic facilities
for the last twenty years. Several schools have remained in heavily damaged state due to war. Puthukkudiyiruppu Mahaa Viththiyaalayam had been completely destroyed in artillery attack carried out by the Sri Lanka
Army during the war. Puthukkudiyiruppu Subramania Viththiyaasaalai had come under aerial attack by Sri Lanka Air Force Kfir bombers. Udaiyaarkaddu Maha Viththiyaalayam was damaged due to artillery attack when it was used as makeshift-hospital. Mu'l'livaikkaal School was completely destroyed by the SLA
in the genocidal war last year. Mullaiththeevu Mahaa Viththiyaalayam, which was destroyed
in Tsunami has not been reconstructed even after six years. Ki'linochchi Kanakapuram School had also come under Kifir aerial attack. Schools destroyed systematically by the Colombo have
not been properly reconstructed. The Sri Lankan authorities have not taken steps to
provide basic infrastructure facilities to Vanni schools even after the
resettlement of uprooted families. Hence, students in rural schools are still attending classes under
shades of trees. Colombo has been conducting
false propaganda under the name of Vadakkin Vasantham that 'development'
is taking place, but in contrary people in Vanni are still
living without basic facilities.
