Sri Lanka’s University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently appointed a
Sinhala officer with powers above the rank of Vice Chancellor in the Eastern University under the pretext of eliminating irregularities and corruption. “The real agenda of the move is subjecting the overwhelmingly Tamil-speaking Eastern University to the insinuations of Mahinda Chintana based ethnic subjugation,” blamed Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP for Batticaloa District C. Yogeswaran, talking to Tamil journalists.
The TNA MP also came hard on paramilitary leaders, SL deputy minister Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan of Karuna Group and Eastern Province chief minister Sivanesathurai Candrakanthan of Pillayan Group for
cooperating with Colombo for its subjugation of Tamil Educational institutions. Mr. Yogeswaran said that he had registered his objection against the new move with the Higher Education Ministry of Sri Lanka. After the military occupation of Tamil homeland, the Colombo government
is actively engaged in cultural and structural destruction of Tamils in their homeland, he said. Colombo is also acquiring the traditional lands in a systematic way, subjecting the Tamils for ethnic subjugation, he complained. Last year, several Sinhala officials were appointed for positions ranging from minor employments to government offices in the districts of Batticaloa and Ampaa'rai.
Parliamentarians and trade unions had opposed such appointments.
