Further reports of election related violence

A press statement issued by the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) said nine incidents were reported yesterday bringing the total number of election related violence to 109, as recorded as at 6:00 p.m., Monday 31.
Elections to the Southern Provincial Council (PC) are scheduled to be held on June 10. According to the CMEV, incidents in the Galle district account for 54.13% of the total number of incidents, concentrated in the Hiniduma electorate, which accounts for 28.44% of the overall total. Thirty-nine incidents have been reported in the Matara district and 11 have been recorded from the Hambantota district, the CMEV statement said. According to the CMEV, the ruling People's Alliance (PA) has made 35 complaints, while the main opposition party, UNP, has lodged 44 complaints, of which 31 are against the PA. The JVP has made 25 complaints, of which 18 are is against the PA. The PA has been cited as the alleged perpetrator in 55 (50.5%) incidents and the UNP and JVP in 16 (14.6%) and 5 (4.6%) incidents respectively, the CMEV statement said.
