Appeal Court reserves order on Jaffna local poll nomination rejection

Sri Lanka’s Court of Appeal Wednesday reserved its order for May 5 in regard to nineteen Writ Applications by the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) against rejection of its nomination lists by the Returning Officers of the districts of Jaffna and Killinochchi to the elections to the nineteen local bodies. Elections to the 19 local bodies in the two districts were postponed by the Commissioner of Elections till the determination of the writ applications.

The nomination lists were rejected by the Returning Officers for the reason that the Tamil nomenclature of the party name UPFA was not in conformity with the name recognized and registered by the Commissioner of Elections.

The Court of Appeal comprised Justices Sathya Hettige (President) and Upali Abeyratne gave time to the petitioner UPFA general secretary Mr.Susil Premjayantha and other respondent parties to file their submission on or before March 31.

In the Jaffna district, the UPFA filed its Writ application against the rejection of its nomination papers for the three Urban Councils – Valvettithurai, Point Pedro and Chavakachcheri and 13 Predesiya Sabhas – Kaarainagar, Kayts, Delft, Vealanai, Valikaamam West, Valikaamam North, Valikaamam South West, Valikaamam South, Valikaamam East, Vadamaradchchi South West, Point Pedro, Chavakachcheri and Nallur in Jaffna district and papers for three Predesiya Sabhas – Pooneryn, Karaichchi and Pachchilaippalli in Killinochchi district.
