A portion of the Railway line at Iratperiyakulam, 4 km south of Vavuniya Railway Station, was damaged in a bomb blast at around 5.00 p.m. this evening. Police suspect that private bus owners who operate an intercity service between Vavuniya and Colombo may be behind the bomb blast.
A 26 year old woman, T.Subashini, was wounded in the blast and has been admitted to the Vavuniya hospital, said police sources. Authorities at the Railway Department said that the train service between Medawachchi and Vavuniya has been disrupted. About one metre length of track was damaged in the blast. Railway engineers are already carrying out repair work while the police are making inquiries. Police sources said that this is the second such incident in the area over the past few days as a portion of the railway track was damaged on Tuesday.
