Country of Eezham Tamils mourns silently on Mu’l’livaaykkaal Day

[TamilNet, Thursday, 19 May 2011, 02:44 GMT]
Subjugated to the extent of not being to able to even observe remembrance of the death of their kith and kin killed in thousands at Mu’l’lvaaykkaay in a powers-abetted genocide enacted by the Sri Lankan State in May 2009, the nation of Eezham Tamils on Wednesday demonstrated dormant anger through silent observations and confining themselves to their houses. The occupying military has ordered against any renting of public halls on Wednesday and has threatened potential organizers with dire consequences. The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has requested people to mourn silently, and people responded. Movement of public, travel and commercial activities were very negligible in Jaffna and in other parts of the country of Eezham Tamils, amidst massive presence of the occupying Army of Sri Lanka.

The occupying military in Jaffna has passed strong orders that no one should rent out public halls or places for gatherings on Wednesday.

However, Non-Governmental Organizations, work places, civil society institutions and community centres quietly and separately observed the day inside their buildings and premises. No press releases or public statements were made. By mid-noon on Wednesday, people gathered in their respective work places and paid homage to the people killed in the Vanni War.

“We live in our worst times of subjugation - unable to even remember our dead,” said a leading Christian priest in Jaffna, who was heading an NGO during the war.

“The Sri Lanka government was trying to hide the truth of the genocide it committed, but time is now coming out with the truth. Eezham Tamils have hopes. We should not concede ourselves to frustration.”

“While rehabilitating ourselves from the devastation of the war, we should strengthen the international efforts of war crimes investigation from our side,” the priest and social worker further said.

Meanwhile, in a remembrance event organised by Tamil National Peoples Front (TNPF), in Jaffna, a victim of the war, who both the parents, lit the fame of sacrifice. Prominent members of the front and academics participated in the event.
